Founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004 under the original name TheFacebook, Facebook is today the largest community network on the Web. The eponymous company is today one of the major players in the field of new technologies with activities in many areas.
Initially reserved for young people at Harvard University, the social network opened to all American students before offering public access two years later. In 2017, the company claimed 2 billion active users.
The Facebook.com site, ranked third in the Alexa ranking, proposes to establish a list of friends and then to share several types of content in different ways. The company has an ecosystem of web applications directly added to its site and enriching interactions (calendar, games, groups, instant messaging ...). Facebook also offers tools that allow professionals to interact with their customers and promote their products or services.

A giant of Silicon Valley
Given its strong social influence, Facebook is frequently at the center of debate and its activities are scrutinized by various regulatory authorities. Several legal, economic or political issues have been raised about the use of the social network, sometimes misused. The company itself has had to comply with the various privacy and data privacy policies in several countries.
Over the years, Facebook has made many acquisitions to increase its user base and acquire new technologies. Examples include FriendFeed (2009), Friendster (2010), Instagram (2012), WhatsApp (2014), Oculus VR (2014) to name only the most popular ones.
From virtual reality to artificial intelligence to Internet coverage of white areas via drones and satellites, the Silicon Valley giant is stepping up its activities and research far beyond the Web, always with the goal of expanding its mass of users and increase its revenues mainly based on targeted advertising.
