Google and Alphabet

Since August 2015, Google has become the subsidiary of the parent company Alphabet. The latter was created to separate the historical activities of Google (search engine, online services, YouTube) from many other areas in which the North American giant has committed:
  • home automation (Nest Labs),
  • biotechnologies (Calico and Verily),
  • Fiber Optic Broadband Internet (Google Fiber)
  • the autonomous car (Google X)
The two founders are at the head of the hoding while Google is led by Sundar Pichai.

Origin of the Google name

The origin of the Google name refers to the mathematical term "gogol" which refers to a number beginning with 1 and followed by 100 zeros. At the turn of the 2000s, after imposing its search engine in the space of a few years, Google began a wide diversification that allowed him to consolidate its business model based on advertising and billing by clicks.

Advertisements in exchange for free services

Google's strategy is to offer many free online services such as GMail messaging, Maps-assisted navigation, the Google Docs suite, the Chrome web browser, the Drive file storage service, and the YouTube video service ( acquired in 2006 for $ 1.6 billion) by getting paid with the advertising traffic they generate.

In 2007, the company took the turn of the mobile by launching its Android operating system for smartphones and tablets. The latter is installed in 2017 on 88% of the phones in the world.

SEO on Google

Google indexes and ranks more than 20 billion Internet pages each day. In order to give the most relevant results, the search engine relies on a complex and ultra-secret algorithm taking into account multiple parameters: numbers of incoming links, use and location of keywords, presence of certain tags, speed page loading, ergonomics, etc. Many specialized companies rely on these parameters to propose an improvement in SEO (SEO or Search Engine Optimization) and allow sites to rise to the top of the search results. At a time when competition is tough, many SEO agencies, specialized in optimizing positions on Google, are developing around the world. In addition to this so-called natural SEO, Google also sells sponsored links (Adwords) appearing at the beginning, at the end or on the left of the classic results.
